GOLF NEWS UPDATE
Dear [First name],
The weather is beginning to get cooler now that Winter is
now among us. We wish everyone who is travelling away for the Winter safe and happy travels and we look forward to your return.
A reminder that entry forms for the June Tournament are out and can be found on the website or next to the scorecard scanner. Saturday 12th June will be a Men’s and Ladies Stableford, Sunday 13th June is a Medley 4BBB Stableford and Monday 14th is Men’s and Ladies Stableford. If you wish to play in the tournament, please put your entry form in immediately as the draw will be completed within the next couple of weeks.
The final of the Singles Knockout has been postponed to Saturday 5th June at this stage. Geoff Hall will play Steve Carr in the final once restrictions have eased.
The annual Seniors Tournament held at the beginning of May was a great success with a field of over 250 players. A massive thank you to all the volunteers who gave up their time to help organise and run the event. These kinds of events do not run without the support of our volunteers. Congratulations to everyone who played and particularly those who may have won something across the 4 days.
Golf Australia have advised that we are now able to remove flagsticks and put all rakes back in the bunkers. Therefore, players may now remove the flagsticks when putting if they wish and all bunker rakes have been put back into the bunkers. As the rakes are back in, you must play the ball as it lies as there is no longer preferred lies.
When raking the bunkers, it is asked that you please rake the bunkers with the flat part of the rake when raking the faces.
On April 28th we had a team from Cobram Barooga Golf Club compete in the regional final of the Volkswagen Scramble at Eynesbury Golf Club. The team consisted of Jack Florance, Connor Ryan, Adrian Kirk, Cal Leighton-Daly and Steffi Vogel. The team played exceptionally well and scored an impressive 50.1 nett to finish on top. With their victory the team have earnt a place in the Championship Final in Queensland with a date yet to be decided.
Irrigation has all but finished for this season, although if no rain comes then watering will be required. The greens are either mown or rolled every day, partly to remove dew but mostly to provide an enjoyable putting surface. There has been a big focus on getting the bunkers on both courses in better shape. Through completing this process, it has been identified that quite a few bunkers need to be topped up with some fresh sand which will be ongoing through Winter. Paving blocks for the Men’s back markers have been painting and will be installed as time allows. Once this is finished it will be easier for Knockout events to be played from the back plates whilst everyone else is to use the tee markers that have been put out.
The Mens Club Championships were completed in April with the winners taking out their titles by a few shots. The 2021 Club Champion is Chris Tomlinson who finished 9 shots clear of defending champion Mark Corradin. In B Grade it was Jon Milovitch who took the title being 3 shots clear of Jake Bush and Geoff Hall. Lastly, in C Grade we had Frank Messner who had a comfortable victory finishing 7 shots in front of Andy Wallace and Ray Bill.
MENS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS AND MENS AND WOMENS COBRAM BAROOGA OPEN
We hosted the Golf Australia Men’s Country Championships and Men’s and Women’s Cobram Barooga Open on May 15 to 16. We had 103 players in the field which included several elite amateurs across Victoria. We had two local winners with Caleb Bovalina taking out the Men’s Country Championships and then the Cobram Barooga Open in a 1-hole playoff. Rowena Wallace also
won the Women’s Cobram Barooga Open. Congratulations to those players and thank you to those who volunteered.
Junior clinics are set to return in June with a date yet to be decided. Casey Chandler recently went to the Golf Australia Junior Girls Camp at Tocumwal Golf Club. Casey learnt a lot of new things about golf along with meeting a bunch of new junior girls.
